Expression désignant une tendance qui, au sein de l’Église d’Angleterre, accentue la continuité avec la tradition catholique, et parfois orientale, et insiste sur le rôle de l’institution ecclésiale, ainsi que sur l’importance de la constitution épiscopale et de la vie sacramentelle. Cette tendance de la High Church, dont on peut discerner les origines au XVIe siècle, à l’époque où l’archevêque de Canterbury Bancroft (1544-1610) et R. Hooker (1554 env.-1600) s’opposent aux presbytériens et puritains, s’est manifestée de manière très variée depuis lors. Au XVIIe siècle, elle est représentée par les Caroline Divines (J. Bramball, H. Hammond notamment), puis L. Andrewes (tenants d’une théologie intermédiaire entre les thèses réformées et les thèses catholiques romaines) ainsi que par W. Laud (1573-1645). Au XVIIIe siècle, les «non-jureurs», tenants du Divine Right of King, fidèles à Jacques II et ne faisant montre que de leur obéissance passive envers Guillaume et Marie, illustrent le souci de la légitimité qui habite la High Church. Consacrant des évêques, ils sont à l’origine d’un schisme qui durera jusqu’à la fin du siècle.

Au XIXe siècle, le mouvement d’Oxford, né à l’initiative de J. Keble (avec son sermon «On National Apostasy , de 1833) et comprenant notamment R. H. Froude, H. J. Rose, W. Palmer, E. B. Pusey, redonne vie à ce que l’on appellera l’«anglocatholicisme», courant attaché à la succession apostolique, à la recherche liturgique, et hostile au libéralisme. Une de ses expressions les plus remarquables se trouve dans les Tracts for the Time : le premier, du 9 septembre 1833, intitulé Thought on the Ministerial Communion Respectfully Addressed to the Clergy , et le dernier, le quatre-vingt-dixième, du 25 mai 1841, Remark on Certain Passage in the Thirty-Nine Articles , sont signés par J. H. Newman.

Le passage au catholicisme de Newman, puis de H. E. Manning et de quelques autres jette pendant quelque temps un certain discrédit sur la High Church. Mais, par son projet même, celle-ci continue à informer de manière significative la vie de l’Église d’Angleterre et tout un aspect de sa participation au mouvement œcuménique.
